Knight announces $7.6M for AI and ethics projects


A $27 million fund aimed at ensuring that artificial intelligence is developed in the public interest has announced its round of funding: $7.6 million, which will be split unequally between MIT’s Media Lab, Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center and seven smaller research efforts around the world. The fund was founded with initial support from Knight Foundation, Omidyar Network, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman (pictured above), the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Jim Pallotta. Colm Toibin wins Dayton Literary Peace Prize

Irish novelist, journalist, and essayist Colm Tóibín, whose fiction and nonfiction captures in heartbreaking detail the impact of exile and political conflict on individual lives, will receive the 2017 Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award, organizers of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize announced this week. Coverage included the Associated Press, The Times of London, the Irish Independent,  and The Irish Times.

Mozilla leads Day of Action for Net Neutrality


For today Internet Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality, Mozilla tapped into the oddly addictive Slow TV phenomenon with an epic, 9-hour video spoof. The offbeat but surprisingly effective video features 9 hours of real-time footage of ordinary things like chickens grazing and clouds rolling as a narrator reads a soothing and seemingly endless selection of the more than 40,000 messages that Mozilla has collected in opposition to the FCC’s efforts to gut net neutrality protections.

PKPR secured coverage in Vice (“This Video Features 9 Hours of Pro-Net Neutrality Comments Read in a Soothing Voice”), The Verge, CNET, International Business Times, and Inverse.

Tenement Museum names new president

The Tenement Museum announced this week that Kevin Jennings, the co-founder of GLSEN and a Department of Education official under President Obama, has been named the new president of the cultural and educational institution dedicated to telling the story of American immigration through the personal accounts of immigrant families.

Albertine launches new literary prize

Aiming to introduce the very best of contemporary French-language literature to American audiences, Albertine, the acclaimed bookshop of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, launched the Albertine Prize, an annual $10,000 award honoring the author and the translator of one Francophone novel published in the U.S.  The inaugural winner was Bardo or not Bardo by Antoine Volodine.
