Knight Awards $3M to Voting Projects

With the nation gearing up for the 2016 elections, the Knight News Challenge on Elections in Austin last week awarded $3.2 million to a range of innovative projects that increase voter participation and better inform voters at both the national and local levels.

Outlets from The Huffington Post to VentureBeat looked at all of the winning projects, while many outlets provided deeper looks at individual winners. Highlights included:

– Gizmodo and Campaigns & Elections looked at a project aimed at making it easier to request and mail absentee ballots by smart phone

– The Guardian profiled a program that will recruit barbers in predominantly African-American communities to disseminate nonpartisan voting information and resources

– The Dailly Dot did a fantastic, in depth piece looking at a project that will expose “dark money” in campaign financing

– National Journal explored an AP project to create a more accurate alternative to exit polling
