Accent Dance NYC’s commissioned choreographer Danielle Diniz has an op-ed in amNewYork today about her grandparents, who came from Mexico and Portugal, and why their story resonates so deeply in this moment.
She writes: “Early in my career, I heard a quote that has never left me: “When you can no longer speak, you sing. When you can no longer sing, you dance. That message has never felt more urgent than right now.”
Accent Dance NYC brings dance education and concert performances to children and families across New York City’s five boroughs. Through collaboration among multidisciplinary, multicultural artists, the company has built a dance-based educational curriculum and created professional performances that champion diversity, connect communities, and celebrate common humanity. Since its founding, Accent Dance NYC has reached more than 30,000 school-aged children with programming that uses the universal mediums of movement and music to build bridges while supporting cognitive skills, discipline, learning, and communication.
