Pacific Forest Trust was featured in Mongabay for its pioneering work restoring lost ecosystems high in California’s redwood canopies by replanting critical fern mats — large masses of ferns that store water, moderate forest temperatures, and provide habitat for plants and animals.
“It’s like having a little garden up there,” said Laurie Wayburn, co-founder and president of the Pacific Forest Trust. “A forest is a system, not just a commodity…We have been managing this forest to put back all the pieces that belong in an old-growth forest while recognizing that this is a managed and young forest.”
